I have read many Raw Food preparation books and love the variety and amazing ideas. BUT none of the books beat RAWLICIOUS! It is the best book to kickstart yourself on RAWS -It is a stunning guide to the world of RAW foods with practical advice on how to equip your kitchen. The colourful photos are recipes in themselves (detailed and clear). What's more,it's South African so most of the ingredients are known and available to us.In addition to all of this, the recipes are easy to follow and even a beginner can produce a delicious gourmet meal.

Fantastic book. Especially in that it helps to find prodcuts without the frustrations normally experienced with books written for the American or other overseas markets. This is not to knock those books but some ingredients just are not easily come by in SA. Suggestion: I know this book will go into more printings, editions etc -- please rework the index so that items / names can be found by seeing on which pages these occur i.e. "aloe" should give all page numbers on which "aloe" appears for easy referrence. The current index is great but should maybe move to the front as a detailed contents item. There are also a few (very few that I noticed) typos / errors which are not serious but detracts from the message of the book -- this just needs a bit of proofreading before the next printing. Otherwise absolutely great and the website is marvelous.

Green/Vegetable Smoothie
Loved your green juice recipe. If you want something a little more substantial, I
just had the most delicious, refreshing Green Vegetable smoothie today.Try this and see how cooling it is on a hot summer's day: 1/2 cucumber (one with spines, about 4cm diameter, with skin); about 4cm of a large, fat zuchinni; 2 slices butternut, bunch fennel, l large ripe tomato, 1/2 small sweetpotato, juice of 1 juicy lemon, tsp himalayan salt,1 dessertspoon of each of following: flaxseed, sunflower seed, sesame seed, 400ml water, 1 large kale leaf, 1 tsp grated ginger. Blended at High speed for a minute in my Hi-Blend blender. You can add extra salt/lemon to taste. Bon Appetit!

Thanks for your contribution Linda. I find it interesting that you say people give you a hard time because you dont eat animals - thinking about it, that is quite bizarre. What I find interesting is that whenever people discover that you are a vegetarian they feel a need to justify their consumption of animals - why? Could this be a bit of deep seated inner guilt? I think I could write a book on the statements I have heard - like - so what did God put cows on the earth for; I don't eat much meat; God said we could eat anything in moderation; I used to be a vegetarian but i wasn't getting enough protein. Well 24 years late I think I have heard them all AND, have still never asked anyone why they eat meat or how much they eat but when I do ask them if they eat dogs and horses and cats they get crazy at the thought- I then ask what the difference is between cows and dogs and horses and point out that people of other nationalities eat these animals. To date I have never received a logical answer. Viva vegetarianism, the diet with a conscience. Thanks again for your input.

My children were in their early teens when they decided to become vegetarians (ovo lacto). At first I told them I am still cooking the way i always did with the usual meat, chicken, fish etc which I absolutely loved. However a year after that, and after watching the many animal nature programmes on TV, and also because of a well known british chef that was out here filming a new series which happened that week to be at an oudtshoorn ostrich farm. He was laughing while he was cooking the ostrich with all the other ostriches standing around and he had no compassion whatsoever. By this time I had made a new years resolution that I wanted to become vegetarian but after the TV programme with the unfeeling chef, i thought to myself 'What am i waiting for?" and that day in December 1997 I gave up meat, fish and chicken and have never knowingly eaten them again. When people ask me why I'm vegetarian, my answer is that "I dont want any creature to die because of me". Some people give me a hard time about it, I dont care and I dont care what pressure and sarcasm some people put on me. I feel good knowing that I am saving a life. By the way, my children are now adults in their late 20's and are still vegetarian.
There are so many other types of food to eat that are tasty and nutritious. I must just add that my very good friend became vegetarian a few years before me and she has always been a good example to me
